Cardio-Metabolic Disease

Cardio renal metabolic disease is a leading cause of death worldwide and the second biggest global drug market. It is therefore a key priority for fundamental research leading to clinical translation. The Cardio-Metabolic disease theme integrates research in the component areas below bringing important synergies to improve cardio-metabolic health. It aims to understand mechanisms of disease and provides a translational framework that links fundamental discovery science to clinical innovation to advance the prevention, stratification and treatment of patients with interconnected metabolic, renal, vascular and cardiac disorders.

The theme includes the following areas:

  • Cardiac & vascular: focus on the mechanisms, diagnosis, risk stratification, prevention, and treatment of heart failure, vascular health, and the role of blood pressure on cardiac function and cardiovascular disease.
  • Renal: focus on key roles of kidney disease in cardiometabolic health as a consequence of other related diseases and a major risk factor for wider vascular and cardiac disease.
  • Diabetes and metabolism: focus on glucose regulation, insulin resistance, weight regulation and liver disease and the metabolic pathways that drive systemic inflammation and the long-term systemic complications of renal, vascular and cardiac disease.
